Headlines at 8am: Headway in Pakistan-IMF talks, rain, tremors, NSC meeting

  • Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund have made headway with negotiations for reviving the country’s bailout programme, the lender’s resident representative in Islamabad said. Sources said the global lender has agreed on Pakistan’s budget targets.

  • A magnitude 6.1 earthquake shook different parts of the country on Tuesday night. The epicentre was reported below the ground in Afghanistan, according to the USGS. The quake affected Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Azad Kashmir.

  • Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has demanded of former prime minister Imran Khan to give an account of the former first lady’s apparent corruption. Addressing a rally in Larkana, he alleged that the PTI chief led the country towards bankruptcy.

  • The National Security Committee meeting will be held in the PM’s Office on Wednesday (today). The committee would take the political leadership into confidence over talks with the banned TTP.

  • Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said that “tough decisions” were taken in order to support the economy and the coalition government would not hesitate if further any such need arose.
