PML-Q leader Pervez Elahi, a candidate for the post of Punjab Chief Minister has been injured in the melee that transpired in the Punjab Assembly today (Saturday) as the session to elect the new chief minister turned violent.
Elahi was provided medical aid after being escorted out of the chamber following commotion that started bwhen PTI and PML-Q MPAs stormed the speaker's dais upon Mazari’s arrival, flinging lotas and manhandling him. The incident, captured on video, shows security guards rescuing Mazari amidst the lawmakers' assault.
Following the altercation, security personnel entered the Assembly, with Elahi also escorted out along with other lawmakers. He could later be seen sitting with a sling around his shoulder and bandaged wrist, while using medical apparatus for assistance in breathing.
"I am feeling extremely unwell," Elahi told reporters while stating that his rival candidate was to blame for the attack.
"This is what I get for being nice to them. Hamza Shehbaz was instructing [lawmakers] to manhandle me while sitting in the assembly," he said.
He added that PML-N MPA Rana Mashood was responsible for his injuries "while Hamza Shehbaz was telling him to give me a thrashing".
Deputy Speaker Dost Mazari, who has taken on the role of speaker due to current speaker Elahi being a candidate for the chief minister position, has also been injured during the scuffle, while four people have been taken into custody for assaulting him.
