Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar on Friday accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and summoned a provincial assembly session at 11am tomorrow (Saturday) for the election of new chief minister, reported Aaj News.
The Punjab cabinet has also been dissolved after Buzdar's resignation has been accepted.
Opposition in the Punjab Assembly has nominated PML-N's Hamza Shehbaz as the new chief minister candidate.
On Monday the united opposition submitted a no-confidence motion against Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar in the provincial assembly. At least 119 lawmakers -- including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan People’s Party MPAs -- have signed the document of no-trust motion against the chief minister in the Assembly Secretariat.
The same day Buzdar announced his resignation, paving the way for the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ally Gujrat's Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi - who is currently Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry - for the chief minister position.
Following the ruling party's promise to the Pakistan Muslim League-Qaid leader for the chief minister position, Elahi took task to back Prime Minister Imran Khan in the National Assembly against the no-confidence motion in the National Assembly which will be held on April 3 (Sunday).
Earlier, Elahi was very close to a deal with the united opposition and made headlines with "nappy comments" for the prime minister's incompetence. He severely criticised the premier and said the decisions taken on the behalf of the government have caused more damage than good and that they should have been learned from their own experiences.
Netizens laud Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi for "nappy" comment
