Bollywood film, The Kashmir Files, released on March 11, has stirred up a storm on social media. While some users say it highlights a neglected and bloody part of Kashmir’s history, others think it’s careless with facts and spreads Islamophobia.
Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the movie tells the story of the exodus of Hindus from Kashmir in the 1990s. It follows a university student who discovers that his Kashmiri Hindu parents were murdered by Islamist militants after, believing all his life, that they died in an accident.
The film has received middling reviews from critics, but has set off a heated debate on Twitter with some people praising the film and others criticising it for the vilification of Muslims.
Agnihotri’s directorial venture was lauded by several leaders of the ruling BJP.
According to Indian news outlet NDTV, PM Narendra Modi said that such films "reveal the truth" and claimed that there has been a "conspiracy" to discredit it. "The entire Jamaat (gang) that raised the flag of freedom of expression has been furious for five to six days. Instead of reviewing the film on the basis of facts and art, there's a conspiracy to discredit it," he said.
BJP ruled states have exempted the film from entertainment tax.
One person thought that The Kashmir Files achieved its goal of pushing boundaries.
But not everyone would agree. Some social media users called out the stereotypical portrayal of Muslims in the film.
“What makes this Kashmir Files absurd is not only their propaganda but also the fact that makers of the film, and its endorsers, actually celebrate killing of Muslims and worship the killers,” said another user.
The Kashmir Files has performed exceptionally well since its opening day. According to the Hindustan Times, its total earnings stand at INR12 crore from the first two days of business.
