Dark humor descends on Twitter as PM “enjoys” time in Russia amid Ukraine invasion

Social media users on Thursday reacted to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Russia at a time when it launched a military operation on its neighbour Ukraine. Doing what Pakistanis arguably do best: create memes, people expressed a “sense of awkwardness” with the entire ordeal - with some levity that one would expect with Twitter.

“IK enjoying in Russia,” said one user.

One person shared a video of a high school fight as a humorous representation of the situation.

Many users criticised the premier for saying that he has arrived in the country “at an exciting time.”

The PM who had landed in Moscow on Wednesday for a two-day visit to Russia was heard telling a member of the welcoming delegation, “What a time I have come... so much excitement.” The video went viral on social media.

Twitter user Sonam Mahajan said, “Ukraine has always backed Pakistan and supplied defence equipment to the notorious Pakistan Armed Forces despite being warned against it, it’s sad that Imran Khan is describing the ongoing tragedy as an exciting time.”

One user accused Russian president for using Imran Khan as a “decoy to show normalcy and attack Ukraine.”

But some people believe the visit was not a total failure.
