PM Imran wanted DGI ISI Faiz to continue says PTI chief whip

The country has been gripped in speculations over the delay in notification of the new DG ISI but PTI's chief whip in the National Assembly Amir Dogar claimed Tuesday that Prime Minister Imran Khan wanted Lt Gen Faiz Hameed to continue in that role due to the situation in Afghanistan.

“The prime minister wanted Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed to serve for a few more months,” Dogar, the special assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs, said during an interview with Samaa on Tuesday night.

Talking to Nadeem Malik, Dogar, who is also special assistant to the prime minister on political affairs, discussed the day's cabinet meeting in which PM Imran spoke about good relationship with the armed forces, dispelling rumors that the parties were not on the same page.

Dogar was asked to speak on the tensions that gripped the nation's interest over the last few days in which the ISPR issued a notice about transfers which included DG ISI Faiz Hameed becoming the new corps commander of Peshawar and Lt Gen Nadeem Amjad becoming the new DG ISI. The latter notifaction is meant to come from the Prime Minister's Office; PM Imran has not yet signed it leading to the speculations we're witnessing.

Dogar says Khan wanted Lt Gen Faiz to continue a few more months.

As mentioned in his press briefing on Tuesday, information minister Fawad Chaudhry spoke about a meeting between Chief of Army Staff Gen Bajwa on Monday and Khan about the situation. He said the issue would be resolved in accordance with the law as the decision of the new DG ISI lay with the prime minister. He said neither party would make any decision that will impact their respective offices in a negative manner.

In his interview, Dogar said three to five names will be put forward before the prime minister and he will pick the new DG ISI from them. "The prime minister said he has no egoistical concerns (when it comes to the appointment)."

In the meeting with the cabinet, it was also reported that Khan said the appointment of the new DG ISI will be solved amicably.
