Priyanka Chopra, Usher and Julianne Hough are set to star as hosts of a new competition show "The Activist" set to air in October but it's already drawn some controversy on social media.
Naomi Klein wondered if it was a Marxist critique on the nature of competition or a sign if the world is ending.
As reported by Deadline on Thursday, the show will feature "six inspiring activists teamed with three high-profile public figures working together to bring meaningful change to one of three vitally important world causes: health, education, and environment."
The report adds that contestants will face challenges and compete in a bid to promote their causes "with their success measured via online engagement, social metrics, and hosts’ input."
The teams have the goal of creating impactful movements that amplify their message, drive action, and advance them to the G20 Summit in Rome, Italy.
According to Deadline, if they make it to the G20 summit, they will meet with world leaders in the hope of securing funding and awareness for their causes. The team that receives the largest commitment is celebrated as the overall winner at the finale, which will also feature musical performances by some of the world’s most passionate artists.
But social media users took the opportunity to poke fun at the notion that activism could be used to generate entertainment content.
Some pointed at the inclusion of Priyanka Chopra who's been called out in the past for her right-wing Hindutva views.
Others objected to Hough's inclusion as a co-host given her doing blackface a Halloween costume in 2013.
Others just posted their horrified reactions to what they felt was a cringeworthy idea.
