The famous 'Afghan Girl' arrested from Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The 'Afghan girl' Sharbat Bibi who got fame in the year 1985 because of her 'green-eyes', was arrested in Peshawar on Wednesday, Aaj News reported.

According to the reports, Sharbat Gula was arrested by the FIA from the Nothia area for illegally possessing a Pakistani ID card. Crackdown against the NADRA officials who issued the fake NICs of Sharbat BiBi is being continued reportedly.

Three National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) officials were also suspended for allegedly issuing her the ID card illegally.

Sharbat Gula, now in her 40s, was being investigated for the past few years by the Pakistani authorities who had discovered she was living in the country with fraudulent identity documents.

National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry took a photograph of Bibi at a refugee camp near Peshawar in 1984. She became known worldwide as 'Afghan Girl', after McCurry's photograph became the cover of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic Magazine. At the time, she was about 12 years old.

Sharbat Bibi was also called as 'Mona Lisa of Afghan war'

According to FIA officials, NICs of both countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan have been recovered from her possession. A court sent her on a two-day physical remand to the FIA.
