Impressed by Punjab Dolphin Force's success in bringing crime rate significantly down on the streets of Lahore in first two months of its launch, People are demanding of the Sindh government to replicate the idea of this modern urban policing system in the city of Karachi.

According to some reports, the provincial government is already thinking of the plan is to introduce the force in the provincial capital Karachi in the first phase and then extend it to all main cities of the province in the next stage. The cities under consideration for introduction of the DF are Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur in Sindh.

The Government of Sindh is likely to approach the center in seeking help from the Punjab in devising a plan to raise the force.

The DF is raised on the pattern of Turkey's national police force, which helped Punjab to train the master trainers.

The province now has sufficient a number of trainers and sizeable infrastructure that it can assist other provinces in the development of the DF infrastructure.

The Punjab government said it has not received a formal request from Sindh either directly or through center, although, it added that it was willing to offer all out assistance to the province in the launch and development of the DF.

Technology is the key to success of Dolphin Force. Modern communication equipment such as Android mobile phones and heavy motorbikes have increased efficiency in maneuverability and response time of police mobile units.

A great achievement of the Dolphin Force is that it has proved its critics, who opposed its launch initially - wrong through its performance, as people now have an added sense of security while the DF personnel are on the patrol.

"I have never felt so safe in the downtown areas of Lahore. The fear of being robbed at gunpoint had always a source of tension for me, but not anymore.

I had a complete comfort of security while being in Lahore this time that allowed me to concentrate on my routine activities fearlessly," 55-year old Ishtiaq Ahmed - a social worker from Karachi said, "Other provinces, particularly Sindh should learn from Punjab's experience and introduce the DF in Karachi and other cities. It will provide a big relief to the citizens of this city."

Fauzia Bano - a 36-year old shopper, also from Karachi, said, "Women have always been vulnerable to stealing and harassment at the shopping centers and other crowded places, whether in Karachi or Lahore.

But from my experience of the security I have this time in Lahore, I will definitely vouch for introduction of the Dolphin Force in Karachi.

The launch of the force is more relevant to the Karachi's case - the city that has always been marred with violence, and street crime being a major portion of it."

Available data on the DF performance for the two months of April and May 2016 reveals the Force have brought street crime significantly down on streets of Lahore.

They have arrested 43 criminals, while cases against 87 persons were registered out of the total snap checking of 146,195 persons. The Force refers all arrested criminals and registered cases to police stations of their jurisdictions for further working on them.

In these two months, the DF has also recovered 30 stolen and snatched cars, while the number of motorcycles recovered was 53.

The number of persons booked in cases related to car crimes was 24 and motorcycles 43. As many as 27981 cars and 44075 were checked by the Force during patrols.

The Force during snap checking of vehicles and persons also recovered illegal arms and ammunition, drugs, alcohol, counterfeit items and cash.

Cases have been registered against the involved criminals. The Dolphin Force has been set up on the pattern of Turkey's National Police Force.

With the establishment of training facility locally the quantity of the DF personnel is being increased to expand their deployment in Lahore, while the Punjab government also plans to launch the DF in Multan, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi in the near future. -Business Recorder
