LARKANA: General Secretary Sindh Chapter of JUI(F)and former senator Dr. Khalid Mahmood Soomro, was laid to rest at Soomro Farm House in Gulshan-e-Haqqani housing society, opposite OPF Colony, Dodai Road here on Saturday night.
Dr. Soomro was about 55. He left behind six sons, three daughters, a widow and four brothers.
According to the will Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro was buried in his ancestral city Larkana at Gulshan-e-Haqqani housing society near Jamia Islamia Ishaat-ul-Quran-Wal-Hadith, Naudero road here.
Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro was shot dead in a targeted attack early Saturday morning. Dr. Soomro was offering his morning prayers in a madrassa in Gulshan-e- Iqbal society in Sukkur when unidentified gunmen entered the mosque there and shot him dead.
The funeral prayers of slain former senator Dr. Soomro was offered in Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Stadium here.
Namaz-e-Janaza was led by Maulana Masood Ahmed Haqqani Soomro.
Thousands of people belonging to Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and other parts of the country attended the funeral prayers. They included notables, central and provincial leaders and workers of JUI(F), politicians.
Among the leaders Hafiz Hussain Ahmed, Federal Minister for Postal Services Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, former federal minister Maulana Atta Rehman, KPK former chief minister Akram Durrani, Provincial President JUI(F) Maulana Abdul Samad Halejvi, SUP Chairman Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah, Zain Shah, Abdul Razaq Abid Lakho, STPP Chairman Dr. Qadir Magsi, Riaz Chandio, JSQM Chairman Sanan Qureshi, Riaz Chandio, Dr. Niaz Kalani, a 20-member delegation of MQM led by former MNA Nisar Panhwar attended the funeral prayer of assassinated JUI(F) leader Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro besides Commissioner Larkana Division Dr. Saeed Ahmed Magnejo, DIG Police Larkana Dr. Sain Rakhio Mirani and other officials.
The slain leader of JUI(F) and former senator Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro was born in village Akil near Larkana on November 7, 1959. He passed primary education from his village, Matric from Government Pilot School Larkana, Intermediate in Government Degree College Larkana and got MBBS degree from CMC Larkana in 1983. Later he went for higher education, received Masters in Economics from Sindh University Jamshoro and received Islamic education in Cairo University of Egypt.
Slain Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro entered politics in 1981 and joined the youth wing JTI of JUI(F) and became General Secretary JUI Sindh in 1988 and remained so for consecutive 8 terms till date.
Dr. Soomro contested several general election including one with Shaheed Benazir Bhutto in NA 207 constituency. He was elected Senator on JUI platform in 2006 and remained a senator till 2012.
During the MRD Movement in the era of Zia ul-Haq, Dr.Khalid Mehmmod Soomro faced 9 months imprisonment for struggle for the revival of democracy.
He was previously attacked 5 times. The latest 6th attack proved fatal.
Dr. Khalid Soomro was an influential member of the party, particularly in Sukkur, Larkana, Hyderabad and other areas of Sindh.
A complete shutter down of businesses was observed in Sindh following the assassination of Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro.
Police in several areas have been put on high alert and security checks are being carried out.
On the occasion, Nasir Mehmood Soomro, the elder son of Dr. Khalid Mehmood Soomro appealed all the workers and devotees to remain calm and patient over the situation.
JUI announced protests and 3 days' country-wide mourning on his death.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, MNA Muhammad Ayaz Soomro and others also expressed grief and sorrow over the assassination of JUI (F) leader.
The district administration Larkana tightened security measures and deployed security personnel including police and ranger to ensure peaceful conditions.
