Dr Osama, who conducted the first post-mortem examination of Karachi businessman Mir Raza, has been removed from his position as a medico-legal officer at Jinnah Hospital over alleged serious errors and negligence in the autopsy report.

Hospital officials confirmed the development on Wednesday, while sources said Dr Osama would appear before an inquiry committee to answer questions about alleged discrepancies in the post-mortem.

The committee will review the autopsy report and other evidence before deciding on further action, the sources said.

Sindh Inspector General of Police Jaaved Alam Odho had earlier acknowledged lapses in the investigation, saying mistakes had been made by various departments, including the health department’s medico-legal officer.

He said efforts were underway to address the shortcomings identified during the investigation and that the case was being investigated in light of the detailed report of a medical board. He added that police had initially proceeded on the basis of the first medico-legal report.

A preliminary medical report prepared after Mir Raza’s exhumation on August 8 found signs of torture on his body.

The report indicated that the bullet entry wound on the back was smaller than the wound on the front, suggesting that the bullet had entered from the rear.

It also found fractured ribs, multiple injuries to the head and face, and a roughly 12-centimetre fracture and wound on the right thigh.

Blood staining was also found in tissues in the lower part of the body.

The report obtained after the exhumation differed significantly from the initial post-mortem report. It found evidence of a deep injury and fracture to the jaw, along with injuries to the nasal bone and other parts of the face.

Investigators collected 17 samples during the exhumation. Samples from Mir Raza’s parents were also collected for DNA matching and are to be submitted to the forensic laboratory at the University of Karachi.

Mir Raza was reburied on August 8 after the samples were collected.

Case background

Mir Raza Ali Khan went missing from the Pakistan Employees Cooperative Housing Society (PECHS) area on July 28. He left home at 4:09am in an online taxi, and his body was found two days later outside a guesthouse in Gulistan-e-Johar.

Police officials said the body was found in a badly damaged condition, with a gunshot wound to the chest. His social media accounts had been shut down a day before his body was recovered.

According to his father, Mir Raza was due to marry on August 30 at Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and had been excited about starting a new chapter in his life.
