The father of young Karachi businessman Mir Raza Ali on Monday opposed the Sindh government’s plan to form a judicial commission to investigate his son’s mysterious death, arguing the move could make the case controversial.

In a letter to the Sindh High Court chief justice on Monday, Mir Hussain said the provincial government appeared to be seeking an escape from the investigation and attempting to “hide behind” a judicial commission.

He maintained that, under the law, the police have the authority to investigate criminal cases and that the ongoing probe into his son’s death should therefore remain with the police.

Mir Hussain said the proposed judicial inquiry would not help the investigation and could instead complicate and politicise the case.

He said the family had complete confidence in the judiciary and was closely monitoring the ongoing investigation.

If necessary, he added, the family would approach the court through legal channels.

The letter came a day after Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar and Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab met Mir Raza’s parents and offered condolences over his death.

Following the meeting, Lanjar said the provincial government would write to the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, on the recommendation of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, seeking the formation of a judicial commission.

However, speaking to the media on Monday, Mir Hussain expressed full confidence in the new police team constituted to probe his son’s death.

He praised committee head DIG Aamir Farooqi, describing him as a well-reputed officer, and said he hoped the committee under his leadership would uncover all the facts and conduct a transparent investigation.
