Former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer has spread beyond his bones and is causing significant pain, his son Hunter Biden said in an interview with the BBC.

“The cancer has spread, metastasised into his bones and further,” Hunter Biden told BBC’s Newsnight, according to video of the interview posted online on Friday.

He described the illness as “very painful” and “very debilitating in many respects”.

A spokesman for the 83-year-old Biden declined to comment on Hunter Biden’s remarks on Saturday.

Biden announced in May 2025, less than four months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones.

His office said in October that he was undergoing radiation treatment and hormone therapy.

Biden, who served as US president from 2021 to 2025, was the oldest person elected to the presidency at the time of his victory in 2020.

His physical health and mental acuity became recurring issues during his presidency, particularly toward the end of his term.

Despite his health problems, Biden has continued to make public appearances.

He attended the dedication of former President Barack Obama’s presidential library in Chicago in June.

Biden served as Obama’s vice president from 2009 to 2017.

His presidential memoir is scheduled to be published on November 17.
