The Punjab government on Monday imposed Section 144 across the province, banning swimming, unauthorised boating and bathing in rainwater accumulation areas for 60 days as heavy monsoon rains continue to create hazardous conditions.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, bathing in rainwater collected on streets, roads, open spaces and other public places has been prohibited.

The order also imposes a complete ban on swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes, while boating in dams, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes and distributaries without prior permission has also been prohibited.

The Home Department said the restrictions had been enforced under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, to protect human lives during the ongoing monsoon season.

A spokesperson for the department said heavy rainfall had led to significant water accumulation in low-lying areas and open spaces, while water levels in dams, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes had risen considerably.

Authorities warned that bathing in rainwater or engaging in swimming and boating during the current weather conditions poses serious risks, particularly to children and young people.

The Punjab Home Secretary directed district administrations and law enforcement agencies to ensure strict implementation of the order.

The Home Department also instructed authorities to launch a public awareness campaign to inform citizens about the restrictions and the dangers associated with entering flooded areas and swollen water bodies during the monsoon season.
