Intermittent monsoon rains continued to lash Lahore and other parts of Punjab for a third consecutive day, inundating low-lying areas and leaving at least 21 people dead in rain-related incidents, sources said on Thursday.

Lahore recorded the highest rainfall in the province, with 343 millimetres of rain over the past 24 hours, according to official figures.

The second spell of the monsoon has brought relief from the summer heat across Punjab but has also caused widespread disruption, with waterlogging in low-lying areas creating difficulties for residents.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said most casualties were caused by roof collapses and other rain-related accidents over the past three days.

In Lahore, two brothers were killed after their motorcycle skidded on a wet road, while four people sustained minor injuries when the roof of a house collapsed in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area.

The ongoing rains have also increased water levels in major rivers and seasonal streams across the province.

Authorities reported low-level flooding in the Indus River at Tarbela and Chashma, while the Chenab River was flowing at high flood levels at Head Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad.

Medium-level flooding was also reported in Nullah Basantar in Narowal district.

Rainfall recorded during the last 24 hours included 343mm in Lahore, 286mm in Gujranwala, 278mm in Sialkot, 235mm in Narowal, 196mm in Murree, 177mm in Mandi Bahauddin, 143mm in Gujrat and 135mm in Jhelum.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast that the current spell of monsoon rains will continue until Friday.
