Karachi police arrest three suspects in Dr Akash murder case within 36 hours
2 min readKarachi police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested three suspects within 36 hours in connection with the murder of young doctor Akash Kumar, who was shot dead during a robbery near Teen Talwar in the Clifton area.
Addressing a press conference, DIG South Asad Raza, accompanied by senior police officials, said investigators identified the suspects after examining footage from more than 100 CCTV cameras, including recordings from the Safe City surveillance network, the Command and Control Centre and private establishments.
Police said investigators first identified a suspect who had conducted reconnaissance before the robbery and then traced his accomplices.
Acting on information obtained during the investigation, police tracked a vehicle in Karachi’s Defence area and arrested three suspects identified as Suresh, Anil and Ram Chand.
Police said they recovered cash, mobile phones, and the weapon allegedly used in the crime from the suspects’ possession.
According to investigators, the arrested men have previously been involved in similar street crimes, while one of them was also a proclaimed offender. Raids are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
The case has been registered at Frere police station. Police also assured the victim’s family that all those involved would be brought to justice.
Dr Akash was shot dead on Monday after armed robbers intercepted his vehicle shortly after he withdrew Rs5 million from a bank near Teen Talwar.
According to police, the assailants escaped with Rs2.5 million after opening fire.
CCTV footage showed one suspect shooting at the vehicle’s security guard before snatching one of two cash bags. The attacker then opened fire on Dr Akash, while security guards returned fire as the suspects fled.
The young doctor suffered two bullet wounds and died at the scene.
His family said he had recently completed his house job at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and had been selected as a government medical officer.
The killing sparked a protest sit-in by relatives and members of the medical community, who demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho had ordered a transparent investigation and directed police to arrest all those involved.
