Iran will close Tehran’s airspace on Monday as part of security and logistical arrangements for the funeral procession of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the ISNA news agency reported.

According to Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation, flights across the country will continue to operate normally on Sunday, but airspace over the capital will be fully shut during Monday’s main funeral ceremonies.

Operations at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport and Imam Khomeini International Airport will be suspended on Monday as public mourning events and the main funeral procession take place in the capital.

Mehrabad airport is scheduled to resume normal operations on Tuesday, while Imam Khomeini International Airport will remain closed, authorities said.

The Civil Aviation Organisation also announced that airspace over the northeastern city of Mashhad, along with operations at Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport, will be fully suspended on July 9, when the final burial ceremony is due to take place.

Authorities said flights across the rest of the country would continue without restrictions on July 7 and 8, with the exception of air traffic over Mashhad during the final day of funeral ceremonies.

Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, an event that triggered weeks of conflict and heightened tensions across the region.

Official funeral ceremonies began on Friday, with foreign leaders and delegations from across the region and beyond travelling to Iran to pay their respects to the late Iranian leader.

Under the official schedule, public farewell ceremonies will culminate in the main funeral procession in Tehran on Monday, followed by ceremonies in the holy city of Qom on Tuesday.

On July 8, commemorative events are scheduled to take place in Baghdad, Najaf and Karbala, where the late leader’s body will be received by religious and political figures before being transferred to major shrines.

The final funeral and burial ceremony is scheduled for July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of Iran’s holiest sites.
