Oman opens temporary maritime corridor in Strait of Hormuz
2 min readOman announced the opening of a temporary maritime corridor for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring its commitment to freedom of navigation and the strategic waterway’s importance to the global economy, sources said on Wednesday.
According to the Oman News Agency, the measure was introduced in coordination with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and follows recent understandings between the US and Iran aimed at ensuring navigation safety and regional stability.
Muscat said the corridor would be available in accordance with coordinates issued by the IMO and relevant Omani authorities, with vessels required to coordinate with the international body before using the route.
The announcement came as Oman and Iran continued consultations on future navigation arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier in the day, the two countries announced the formation of a joint working group to negotiate the future management of navigation in the strategic waterway, maritime services to be provided there and related costs, in coordination with other Gulf littoral states and in line with international law.
Under the Islamabad Understanding, Iran agreed to hold discussions with Oman on the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz and pledged to ensure the safe and toll-free passage of commercial vessels between the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman for 60 days, with shipping resuming immediately.
Iran and the US announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point agreement, brokered by Pakistan, aimed at ending hostilities and resolving outstanding disputes through dialogue.
The accord, known as the Islamabad Understanding, came into force on June 18 after being electronically signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump.
The agreement includes provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US naval blockade imposed on Iran.
