Iran, Oman back tariff-free shipping through Strait of Hormuz
2 min readIran and Oman on Tuesday reaffirmed their support for tariff-free commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring a key provision of the recently signed MoU between Tehran and Washington during talks in Muscat on the future management of the strategic waterway.
Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi announced the position after meeting Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in Oman following negotiations with US officials in Switzerland.
The talks focused on provisions of the Iran-US agreement relating to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.
“We affirmed our commitment to international law and to ensuring toll-free, safe passage,” Al Busaidi said in a post on X.
Qalibaf and Araghchi travelled to Muscat to discuss new arrangements concerning the governance and security of the waterway.
According to Oman’s official news agency, both sides stressed the importance of using the current diplomatic momentum to support peace efforts, promote de-escalation and strengthen regional stability in accordance with international law and the principles of good neighbourliness.
The two countries also underscored the need to safeguard regional security and ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and other international waterways.
The meetings in Muscat came after 18 hours of negotiations in Switzerland under Pakistani and Qatari mediation aimed at implementing the recently signed agreement between Iran and the United States.
Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that Qalibaf is also expected to meet Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq during the visit to discuss bilateral ties and regional coordination.
