Iran sets strict conditions for Hormuz reopening, warns over US blockade
2 min readIran has reopened the Strait of Hormuz under strict conditions, allowing only limited commercial shipping while warning it could shut the route again if the ceasefire is breached.
According to reports by Tasnim News Agency, citing sources close to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the reopening follows a conditional understanding reached with the United States.
The report said Iran had initially agreed to allow a fixed number of vessels to pass daily after the ceasefire, but suspended the arrangement due to developments in Lebanon. The mechanism has now been reactivated.
Under the terms, only commercial vessels are permitted to transit the strait, while military ships are strictly barred. Ships linked to hostile countries or carrying their cargo will also be denied access.
Iran has further mandated that all vessels must follow designated routes set by its authorities and maintain constant communication with its forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Tehran warned that any continuation of the US naval blockade would be treated as a violation of the ceasefire, potentially triggering a renewed closure of the waterway.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had announced that the strait would remain open for commercial shipping during the ceasefire period, with routes coordinated by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation.
However, US President Donald Trump later stated that while the strait is open to global trade, the US Navy’s blockade targeting Iran will remain “in full force” until a final agreement between Washington and Tehran is reached.
An Iranian presidential spokesperson rejected Trump’s assurances regarding future access, warning that any breach of the agreement would lead to “serious consequences.”
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, making its status central to regional stability and global markets.
