Former US vice-president and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has suggested she is “thinking about” another White House bid in 2028, marking her clearest signal yet that she may return to the campaign trail after her defeat to Donald Trump.

Speaking at the National Action Network’s annual convention, Harris was asked directly whether she intended to run again, prompting chants from the audience urging her to re-enter the race.

While she stopped short of making a formal announcement, she left the door open, according to Al Jazeera.

“Listen, I might, I might. I’m thinking about it,” she said, adding that her decision would depend on “who and where and how the best job can be done for the American people.”

Harris, who served as vice president under former president Joe Biden from 2021 to 2025, pointed to her experience inside the White House as she reflected on her political future.

Her comments come after a turbulent 2024 election in which she became the Democratic nominee following Biden’s late withdrawal from the race.

She ultimately lost to Donald Trump, who obtained 312 electoral college votes against her 226.

Despite the loss, Harris highlighted her more than 75 million votes and reiterated her experience in national security and executive decision-making, noting her time in the West Wing, the Oval Office and the Situation Room.

Harris became the Democratic nominee in 2024 under unusual circumstances after President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance triggered internal party pressure for him to withdraw.

She was later chosen as the party’s candidate despite not taking part in the primary contests.

At the convention, civil rights leader Al Sharpton introduced Harris and referenced her political resilience, while also warning supporters about the current political direction under Trump.

Harris also used her remarks to criticise US foreign policy under Trump, describing the US-Israel war against Iran as a “war of choice” and warning that America’s global influence was weakening.

Although she did not formally declare a 2028 candidacy, her comments added momentum to speculation that she may seek another run for the presidency, joining a growing list of potential Democratic contenders eyeing the next election cycle.
