US and Israel sustain air campaign on Iran after three weeks, CSIS reports
2 min readU.S. and Israeli forces have maintained a high‑tempo air campaign against Iranian military targets for more than three weeks, with Washington settling into a sustained rhythm of strikes even as Tehran’s ability to launch missiles and drones has diminished, according to an analysis by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
The report by CSIS senior adviser Mark F. Cancian and research associate Chris H. Park showed that after initial intense activity, the U.S. effort has settled into a pace of 300 to 500 targets struck per day as military leaders transition to cheaper, short‑range munitions following early use of long‑range weapons.
U.S. forces struck more than 1,000 targets in the first 24 hours of Operation Epic Fury, while the Israeli Air Force added over 750 strikes, the analysis said, citing U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) data. After the first week, the coalition was able to operate with fewer restrictions, increasing reliance on less expensive ordnance such as Joint Direct Attack Munitions.
The report estimated that by day 14, the United States and Israel had struck over 15,000 targets, with Israeli operations accounting for more than half of those, based on CENTCOM figures and coalition releases.
Iran’s response has shown a marked decline in drone and missile launches after the opening phase of the conflict.
Gulf state data compiled in the CSIS analysis indicated a sharp drop in Iranian strikes, although Tehran’s forces continued limited operations against neighbouring states.
Coalition partners, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, reported high interception rates of Iranian airborne threats, aligning with the upper end of figures achieved by other air defence campaigns in recent conflicts.
The CSIS report noted that while Iranian launches have diminished, they have not ceased, and some missiles and drones continue to be intercepted over Gulf states’ territories.
