HBO begins work on Harry Potter season 2 before season 1 release
2 min readHBO has confirmed that work on the second season of its upcoming Harry Potter series has already begun, even though the first season is still months away from release.
Speaking to The Times of London, HBO CEO Casey Bloys said the writing for Season 2 is underway to prevent long gaps between seasons.
“Our goal is not to have a huge gap, especially because the kids are growing. It’s not going to be an annual; the show is too big and too massive. But … they’re writing season two now,” he explained.
The early start is practical, given that the story follows young characters progressing through their school years at Hogwarts.
Production delays could create noticeable age gaps between the actors and their characters.
While the series is too large in scale for strict annual releases, HBO intends to avoid the long multi-year breaks seen in other major streaming shows.
The first season is scheduled to premiere in December 2026 and will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with subsequent seasons expected to cover one book each.
Starting Season 2 before Season 1 airs is unusual, but Bloys said HBO is planning the show as a long-term franchise.
The approach will allow the story to progress more smoothly from one Hogwarts year to the next without major delays, maintaining continuity in the young cast’s appearances.
