India beat West Indies to seal T20 World Cup semi-final spot

India secured a place in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after defeating the West Indies by five wickets in a decisive Super Eight encounter on Sunday.

Playing at Eden Gardens, India successfully chased a challenging target of 196 runs in the final over, completing the tournament’s highest successful run chase so far and confirming their progression to the last four.

Batting first, West Indies posted a competitive 195 for 4, with Roston Chase scoring 40, while Jason Holder added 37 and captain Rovman Powell contributed 34 runs.

Holder and Powell accelerated late in the innings, adding 76 runs in an unbeaten partnership.

India’s chase began shakily after early wickets, but opener Sanju Samson anchored the innings with a match-winning unbeaten 97, striking four sixes and 12 boundaries to guide his side to 199 for 5 with four balls remaining.

The victory ended the West Indies’ campaign in the tournament and completed the semi-final lineup.

South Africa will face New Zealand in the first semi-final on March 4, while India are scheduled to take on England in the second semi-final on March 5 as they aim for a third consecutive appearance in a T20 World Cup final.
