New Zealand set England a target of 160 runs in a crucial Super Eight match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday, with the outcome carrying major implications for the semi-final race.

After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner opted to bat first. The Black Caps posted 159 for seven in their allotted 20 overs in the Group Two encounter.

The match has gained added significance as both teams’ results directly impact qualification scenarios.

England have already secured a place in the semi-finals with two wins, while New Zealand require at least one more point to confirm progression.

A New Zealand victory would seal their semi-final berth and end Pakistan’s campaign in the mega event.

However, an England win would keep Pakistan’s qualification hopes alive.

New Zealand currently hold three points from two matches, while Pakistan have one point and are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight fixture on Saturday in Pallekele.

If England defeat New Zealand and Pakistan overcome Sri Lanka, qualification for the semi-finals will be decided on net run rate between Pakistan and New Zealand.

The upcoming Pakistan-Sri Lanka clash is therefore expected to play a decisive role in determining the group standings.
