Former UK prime minister Gordon Brown has intensified his calls for the release of documents linked to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, describing the revelations as deeply shocking and a betrayal if allegations involving senior political figures are proven.

Brown wrote in a comment piece that he found it difficult to express his revulsion at what had been uncovered about Epstein and its impact on politics, adding that “the time is overdue to let in the light.”

In particular, Brown has questioned allegations that former UK minister Peter Mandelson shared market-sensitive documents with Epstein during the financial crisis.

Mandelson was arrested on Monday on suspicion of misconduct in public office and denies any wrongdoing.

Brown has pursued access to Epstein-related records, writing to the then cabinet secretary Chris Wormald after initial emails emerged suggesting links between Mandelson and Epstein.

He was told no relevant papers had been found.

In a later article, Brown said he had examined Epstein-related files and reported concerns about alleged abuse and Britain’s role in enabling exploitation.

He also called for police to speak to former royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor about what he might know.

Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and denies wrongdoing.

Brown has submitted evidence to police forces covering airports reportedly used by Epstein, and has been assisted in reviewing documents by journalist Clare Rewcastle.

Supporters say Brown’s actions reflect his personal outrage over the scandal and the need for accountability.

Critics and political insiders have described his approach as driven by long-standing concerns about public integrity.

Brown is expected to continue calling for investigations to proceed while also pursuing other public policy initiatives.
