MQM-P rejects Sindh Assembly’s ‘undemocratic and anti-Pakistan’ resolution on Karachi
4 min readMuttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Chairman Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Sunday lashed out at the Sindh government following the passage of a resolution declaring Karachi an “inseparable” part of the province.
Addressing a high-level press conference at the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters alongside the party’s top leadership, Siddiqui termed the move an “undemocratic and anti-Pakistan” act.
“Does a province have the right to pass a resolution that conflicts with the Constitution of Pakistan?” Siddiqui asked, asserting that the move was an attempt to undermine the constitutional process for administrative reforms. The party leadership maintained that the resolution serves a specific political agenda rather than the interests of the country’s economic hub.
MQM-P central leaders Mustafa Kamal, Dr Farooq Sattar, Anis Kaimkhani, Syed Amin-ul-Haque, Faisal Subzwari, and members of the Central Committee were also present during the presser.
The development comes a day after the Sindh Assembly adopted a resolution reaffirming Karachi as an “integral and inseparable part” of the province. The move served as a categorical rejection of any proposals or discourse regarding the creation of a separate administrative unit for the provincial capital.
The house on Saturday condemned “any conspiracy aimed at the division of Sindh or the creation of a separate province comprising Karachi”.
Taking the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to task, Dr Siddiqui stated that the group occupying Sindh for the past 17 years is evading accountability for its worst governance, corruption, and incompetence; hence, the stunt of hatred and division has been unleashed.
He remarked that PPP’s politics began with the slogan of “Idhar Hum, Udhar Tum” (Us here, you there), and yesterday’s assembly session was a blatant manifestation of that same mindset. He asserted in categorical terms that not a single demand of the MQM-P falls outside the Constitution or the law, adding, “We are not slaves, but people bound by loyalty; our motherland is only Pakistan.”
He further noted that while all provinces accepted Urdu as the national language in 1971, Sindh was the sole exception because the objectives were different, aims which have now been fully exposed. The MQM-P chairman claimed that over 15 million people were deliberately undercounted in Karachi’s population; yet, 37 per cent of the province’s population resides in the city.
He demanded a transparent census under military supervision, asserting that it would instantly dismantle the “fake map of numerical majority” in Sindh. According to authentic evidence, he claimed, Karachi’s population exceeds 40 million, making it “full Pakistan” rather than “mini Pakistan.”
Dr Siddiqui pointed out that the Constitution authored by Bhutto himself allows for the creation of new provinces, yet today, that very spirit is being trampled upon in a betrayal of their own leaders.
“If demanding a province is treason, is creating districts on linguistic grounds a sign of patriotism?” he questioned. He highlighted that while Karachi was among the world’s fastest-growing cities in 2008, 17 years of PPP rule have pushed it into the list of the world’s worst cities. He stressed that the implementation of Article 140-A is a matter of survival for the entire country, not just Karachi.
Addressing the prime minister directly, he stated that enforcing the Constitution is an official responsibility and reminded him that the Constitution also allows for a referendum. He lamented that court decisions are being discarded and argued that the recent resolution constitutes contempt of the Supreme Court.
“If you do not accept MQM-P’s demands, so be it, but at least fulfil the demands of the Constitution,” he urged. Dr Siddiqui also accused Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman of being part of the conspiracies against Karachi, alleging that the greed for a single seat led to a “sale of conscience.” He further criticised PTI for siding with the PPP on this issue, calling it an act of constitutional enmity.
The MQM-P chairman concluded with a clear warning: “Do not intimidate us with the fear of riots.” He declared the resolution illegal, immoral, and undemocratic, adding that while Ramadan will be spent in prayer, a decisive struggle for the defence of the Constitution, the public, and Pakistan will follow. He predicted that if a transparent census is held, the demand for a province will arise from elsewhere in Sindh, not from Karachi.
