T20 World Cup: Rain washes out Pakistan-New Zealand Super Eight clash in Colombo
2 min readPakistan’s Super Eight fixture against New Zealand in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was abandoned due to persistent rain in Colombo, with both teams awarded one point each.
The Group 2 encounter saw the toss take place on schedule, with Pakistan opting to bat first. However, steady rain shortly after the toss prevented any play, forcing officials to eventually call off the match.
Ground staff had covered the pitch as overcast conditions lingered throughout the evening, leaving no window for the game to begin.
The washout means both teams open their Super Eight campaigns with a shared point, a result that could prove significant in the tightly contested stage of the tournament.
Earlier, Pakistan had announced a line-up featuring captain Salman Ali Agha, Fakhar Zaman, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Usman Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Salman Mirza and Usman Tariq.
New Zealand, led by Mitchell Santner, included Tim Seifert, Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Matt Henry, Ish Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson.
Pakistan will now turn their focus to their second Super Eight match against England on Tuesday, a crucial fixture as teams vie for a place in the knockout stage.
Both Pakistan and New Zealand had entered the Super Eight phase after strong group-stage performances, finishing second in their respective groups with three wins each.
With the tournament entering a decisive stretch, weather disruptions add another layer of complexity to the race for the semi-finals.
