OGDCL announces major oil and gas discovery in Kohat
The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a significant oil and gas find at its Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well in District Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The company, in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Tuesday, said the discovery was made in the Samana Suk and Shinawari formations under the Nashpa Exploration License, where OGDCL holds a 65% stake.
Joint venture partners Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) hold 30% and 5% interests, respectively.
During testing, the well produced 3,100 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 8.15 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD) through a 32/64″ choke, at a wellhead pressure of 3,010 psig, according to a report in Business Recorder.
Baragzai X-01 (Slant) was spud-in on December 30, 2024, to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of several formations, including Lockhart, Hangu, Lumshiwal, Samana Suk, Shinawari, Datta, and Kingriali.
The well reached a total depth of 5,170 metres, with previous drill stem tests in the Kingriali and Datta formations also yielding oil and gas.
OGDCL said the latest discovery will help reduce Pakistan’s energy supply gap through domestic resources and strengthen the hydrocarbon reserves of the company, its partners, and the country.
This announcement follows PPL’s Monday disclosure of a gas discovery at its Bilitang-1 exploratory well, also located in Kohat.
