Sharjeel Memon says PTI tried to repeat May 9 violence in Karachi
Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has criticised the acts of vandalism witnessed during PTI’s recent public rally in Karachi, during which media workers were assaulted, and TV channel vans were damaged by angry protesters.
Speaking at a press conference in Karachi on Tuesday, Sharjeel Memon said that an attempt was made to repeat the May 9 incident in Karachi, with police being pelted with stones and male and female journalists targeted in attacks, in line with PTI’s “old traditions.”
Sharjeel Memon said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was provided full security and protocol by the provincial government during his visit to the province.
Memon reminded that PPP leader Saeed Ghani welcomed Suhail Afridi at the airport and, in line with Sindh’s tradition, presented him with an ajrak and Sindhi cap.
Suhail Afridi had been assured that he would receive full protocol during his visit.
He claimed that a security threat had been received in advance, which was promptly communicated to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.
The senior minister said that the PTI violated the commitments it made to the Sindh government, and Afridi visited places considered sensitive despite being advised against it.
According to Memon, due to security concerns, a specific route had been arranged for Afridi’s convoy, but PTI violated the agreed route.
He added that the PTI had been permitted to hold a rally at Jinnah Ground but “did not show respect for the rules.”
Memon said that while the Sindh government exercised restraint, attempts were made to replicate the May 9 incident in Karachi.
He further claimed that during the rally, TV channel vehicles were damaged and female journalists were attacked, describing the incidents as “extremely regrettable.”
Memon claimed that the PTI did not follow the agreed route for the rally, adding that CM Afridi went to Hyderabad, where he launched personal attacks in his speeches.
He added that the PTI made it clear that it was not interested in engaging in mainstream politics.
Separately, Memon highlighted work on the ongoing development projects in Sindh, including notable improvements in the transport sector.
He said the provincial cabinet had approved Rs100 million for the Sindh Cardiovascular Institute and had also approved the restoration of a church in Hyderabad.
He highlighted that the Sindh government had allocated a development package of Rs83 billion for Karachi, which is currently being implemented.
