China will boost investment in its power grid to build a system that can absorb more new energy power, according to government guidance on high-quality grid development published Wednesday.

China aims to establish a new grid system to support a west-to-east power transmission program exceeding 420 gigawatts by 2030, according to the guidance issued by the National Energy Administration and the National Development and Reform Commission.

The program will include about 40 GW of additional interprovincial balancing capacity, with new energy - which includes various forms of energy beyond traditional sources - reaching about 30% of total power output.

The guidance also warns against over-building and encourages private capital to participate in grid investment and construction.
