Lahore trader gets over Rs2.38m in e-challans for motorcycles registered in his name
A motorcycle trader involved in selling bikes on instalments has been issued more than Rs2.38 million in e-challans for traffic violations linked to motorcycles registered in his name, officials said on Tuesday.
The trader, identified as Sadiq Khan, operates a motorcycle instalment business in Garhi Shahu and has been in the trade for the past 15 years.
According to Safe City authorities, e-challans worth Rs2,388,700 were issued against vehicles registered under his name for repeated traffic violations.
Officials said around 500 motorcycles remain registered in Khan’s name, resulting in a total of 2,071 traffic challans.
The matter came to light when a traffic warden stopped a motorcycle at Campus Bridge that was registered to Khan. The vehicle alone had outstanding fines of Rs12,000.
Further verification through Khan’s identity card revealed cumulative unpaid challans exceeding Rs2.3 million, police said.
Speaking to reporters, Khan said several buyers failed to transfer ownership of motorcycles to their own names even after completing instalment payments, leaving him legally responsible for traffic violations committed by others.
Traffic police have granted Khan a few days to clear the outstanding challans. Officials warned that failure to resolve the fines could lead to the cancellation of his national identity card.
The case has renewed concerns over ownership transfer practices in instalment-based vehicle sales and their legal implications for sellers.
