Transport strike cripples travel and goods supply in Punjab
A province-wide strike by transporters against the enforcement of new traffic laws and heavy fines on Monday disrupted public transport and goods movement across Punjab.
Goods transporters also joined the protest, causing major inconvenience to commuters in cities including Lahore and Rawalpindi.
In Rawalpindi, general bus stands, coach terminals and intra-city transport remained shut in the morning hours, while inter-provincial and inter-district services have also been suspended due to the strike.
School van owners also joined the protest, preventing many children from reaching school.
The suspension of goods transport also affected the supply of food and essential items.
Speaking to the media, transport association Chairman Irfan Niazi said that negotiations were held in Lahore with Provincial Minister Bilal Akbar, but no progress was made.
He added that the next round of talks is scheduled later today, and the strike will continue until a breakthrough is achieved.
Transporters are demanding the withdrawal of the Punjab Traffic Ordinance 2025, arguing that the traffic fines are exorbitant and far exceed fare revenues.
They reiterated that the strike would continue until their demands are met.
