55 Iranians deported from US under Trump’s immigration policy
Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on Sunday that 55 Iranian nationals are being deported from the United States, marking the second group sent back under President Donald Trump’s stricter immigration policies.
Mojtaba Shasti Karimi, director-general of consular affairs at Iran’s foreign ministry, told Mizan News Agency that the deportees had completed “legal and administrative procedures” through Iran’s Interests Section in Washington, DC.
Iranian diplomatic missions in transit countries were instructed to ensure the nationals are treated “properly and humanely” during the transfer.
Details about the identities of the deportees or their expected arrival in Iran were not disclosed. The group is reportedly being flown from an ICE facility in Arizona to Egypt and will then continue to Iran via Kuwait.
The announcement follows a December 5 report by the BBC that US authorities planned to deport more than 50 Iranians within 48 hours.
In a CNN interview, an Iranian scheduled for the flight claimed returning to Iran would endanger his life due to his sexual orientation, which is punishable by death in Iran.
He said he had applied for asylum in the US, but his claim was still unresolved. CNN could not independently verify his account.
Earlier, on September 29, 120 Iranians, including three women, were deported to Iran in a charter flight, with reports of mistreatment and security escorts during their transfer.
Officials said US authorities plan to deport nearly 400 Iranians in total.
