FO says Pakistan-Afghanistan ceasefire not holding amid continued attacks

Says ceasefire was an understanding that Afghan-sponsored terrorist groups would cease attacks inside Pakistan

Pakistan on Friday said the ceasefire understanding with Afghanistan cannot be considered effective as terrorist attacks originating from Afghan soil have continued despite assurances.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said at a briefing that the arrangement was never a “traditional ceasefire” between the two states but an understanding that Afghan-sponsored terrorist groups would cease attacks inside Pakistan.

He said major attacks carried out by the TTP, FAK and Afghan nationals after the announcement of the ceasefire indicate that the commitment has not been upheld.

“If Afghan nationals are continuously attacking, as seen recently in Islamabad and other places, we cannot be very optimistic about the ceasefire,” he said.

The spokesperson stressed that the understanding must be viewed strictly in the context of preventing cross-border terrorism, not as a conventional ceasefire between two countries.
