Adiala jail rejects rumours about Imran Khan’s health

Authorities stress Khan remains in Adiala Jail and in good health
Adiala Jail Update | PTI Leader Health | By-Elections 2025 Results Announced - Breaking News

The administration of Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail has categorically denied social media rumours about the health of former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, stating that he is “healthy and present inside the jail”.

The clarification came after a wave of unverified posts circulated online on Wednesday, alleging that Imran Khan had passed away in prison.

Jail officials dismissed the claims as baseless, saying the former prime minister is receiving complete medical care and that reports of his transfer to any other location are false.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail for more than two years in connection with multiple corruption and terrorism-related cases.

Rumours about his death spread rapidly on Wednesday night and were widely picked up without verification by several Indian and Afghan media outlets.

Accounts on X, including Daily Kabul News and Afghanistan Times, claimed — without evidence — that Imran Khan had been killed in jail.

Afghanistan Times went as far as alleging, citing so-called “credible sources”, that his body had been moved out of the facility.

Jail authorities, however, strongly refuted all such allegations.

Indian TV channel “TV9” also aired breaking news claiming that Khan’s body had been shifted from the jail.

An account linked to the India-backed extremist group Fitna Al Hindustan further amplified the rumours, referencing outlets already pushing unsubstantiated claims.

PTI leader Shaukat Basra also said in a video message that he feared Imran Khan may have been moved out of Adiala Jail.

Khan’s sisters and children have long argued that he is being kept in solitary confinement and denied family meetings, despite an Islamabad High Court order allowing the family to meet him twice a week.

When Khan’s sisters arrived at Adiala Jail on Wednesday, they were stopped near a checkpoint, prompting PTI workers and the sisters to stage a sit-in that lasted several hours.

The protest ended after jail officials and police assured Aleema Khan that a meeting with her brother would be arranged.

As rumours of Imran Khan’s death gained traction online, Adiala Jail authorities issued an immediate rebuttal.

Private broadcaster Geo News, on its English-language website, carried a statement from the jail administration saying: “There is no truth in reports about Imran Khan’s health. He is absolutely fine and under complete care.”

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has also previously said that Imran Khan is being provided more facilities in jail than those available during earlier governments.

He said the PTI founder has access to a TV, exercise equipment, a double bed with a velvet mattress, and meals “better than those of a five-star hotel”.

He contrasted this with his own time in prison, saying he slept on a cold floor and ate ordinary jail meals.
