Actors Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan have reunited on screen for their new film Neelofar, marking their first major project together since the hit series Humsafar.

The film, distributed by Film Master Media Distribution, is set for release over the UAE National Day weekend.

Fawad, who also serves as producer, said the project took years to reach audiences due to the pandemic and other unforeseen delays.

“Had it not been for COVID or a few circumstances, this film may have been released earlier,” he said, describing the production period as “challenging” and emotionally taxing.

Mahira acknowledged she questioned at times whether their long-established chemistry would translate after years apart. “There were moments I’d ask him, ‘Do we still have it?’” she said.

Fawad, however, maintained he had no doubts. “If you enjoy performing together, someone out there will feel it too,” he said.

In Neelofar, Mahira portrays a visually impaired woman, a role that required both actors to rethink traditional screen romance.

“Looking into each other’s eyes is the easiest way to convey love on screen,” she noted. “But here, she can’t see him.” Fawad added that the performance challenge fell largely on her: “She has to express without eye contact.”

Although Fawad produced the film, it carries Mahira’s character’s name, a decision he said “felt appropriate” as the story revolves around her journey. Mahira described the gesture as “generous,” noting many actor-producers opt for titles tied to their own roles.

The film’s release over the UAE National Day long weekend was a strategic choice.

“We looked at Christmas and Thanksgiving releases globally,” Fawad said. “National Day weekend made sense, strong footfall, cooler weather and minimal clashes.”

Beyond its central romance, Neelofar incorporates subtle social commentary that Fawad describes as “relevant to the times” without being overt or didactic.

The pair’s reunion has generated significant anticipation among fans, with the actors emphasising that love stories continue to resonate despite changing audience expectations.

“In a time when relationships struggle, perhaps there is even more need to fight for love,” Fawad said
