Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has asked Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori to step down as the federal government moves ahead with a decision to change the province’s top constitutional office, officials familiar with the development said on Wednesday.

According to the sources, the governor has been told to submit his resignation. If he refuses, the government is prepared to de-notify him through a formal notification.

Names under consideration for the new Sindh governor include former FIA chief Bashir Memon and former senator Nehal Hashmi. In Karachi, retired Brigadier Haris Nawaz has also emerged as a potential candidate.

The move is part of a broader political understanding under which two provincial governorships will go to the Pakistan Peoples Party and two to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the sources added.

The final decision is expected soon, pending consultations within the ruling coalition.
