The ongoing sugar crisis has deepened in the country, with prices rising sharply across major cities.

In Quetta, the sugar price reached Rs225 per kilogram, while in Lahore and Karachi, the commodity is being sold around Rs200/kg and for Rs185/kg in Islamabad.

The situation is slightly better in Peshawar, where sugar is priced at Rs166/kg.

In Lahore, despite various measures taken by the government to control the situation, the sugar crisis continued, with many stores selling the commodity between Rs180 and Rs210 per kilogram.

In Punjab, the district administration is also struggling to enforce the official rate of Rs177/kg.

Sugar crushing season delayed

Meanwhile, a delay in the crushing season has prompted the Punjab Cane Commissioner to issue notices to ten sugar mills.

Mills were ordered to begin crushing by November 15, but crushing has yet to begin in many units.

The authorities have summoned Mills management to the Cane Commissioner’s office on November 26.

Sources indicate that failure to provide satisfactory responses could result in daily fines of up to Rs1 million.

Officials warn that the delay in starting the crushing season is also affecting timely wheat sowing, adding to agricultural concerns.
