Markazi Muslim League challenges Karachi e-challan system in Sindh High Court
The Pakistan Markazi Muslim League has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court challenging the Karachi traffic police’s e-challan system, naming the Sindh chief secretary, inspector general of police, DIG Traffic, NADRA, and the Excise Department as respondents.
The petition was filed by the party’s Karachi president, Ahmad Nadeem Awan, who argued that the system had become a “money-making tool” for the Sindh government rather than a means to ensure traffic discipline.
Awan stated in his plea that Karachi’s road infrastructure was in a dilapidated state and that imposing heavy fines under such conditions was unjustified.
He also pointed out regional disparity, questioning why a traffic violation fined Rs200 in Lahore carried a Rs5,000 penalty in Karachi.
He termed the threats to block citizens’ computerised national identity cards (CNICs) over unpaid fines as “illegal and coercive.”
The petitioner warned that if the “injustice” continued, the party would expand its legal struggle against the system.
The Markazi Muslim League’s legal team includes Mudassar Iqbal Chaudhry, Muhammad Siraj, and Naseer Iqbal Advocate.
