A preliminary police report on the deadly building collapse in Karachi’s Lyari area, which claimed 27 lives, has been submitted to the court.

The report has held 14 individuals accountable, including six directors of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and the building’s owner.

The case was registered by an officer of the Sindh Local Government, Housing, and Town Planning Department.

According to the report, the building was originally constructed in 1986 as a ground-plus-five-storey structure divided into two sections.

Both sections had been in a dangerously dilapidated state for years. Despite SBCA officials knowing since 2022 that the building was unsafe, no action was taken to secure or vacate it.

Investigators said the gross negligence and carelessness of the SBCA officers led directly to the collapse of the section housing 20 flats.

The disaster claimed the lives of 27 men, women, and children and left four others injured.
