The official X account (formerly Twitter) of global news agency Reuters has been restricted in India following a legal request, according to notifications displayed on the platform.

As of late Saturday night, users trying to access the @Reuters handle were shown a message stating that the account had been “withheld in IN in response to a legal demand,” News18 reported. Reuters has not yet provided any official comment explaining the circumstances behind the move.

The restriction also extended to Reuters World, which remained inaccessible at 11:40 pm Saturday. However, other related accounts including Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Pictures, Reuters Asia, and Reuters China continued to be available in India.

Reuters is the news division of Thomson Reuters, employing around 2,600 journalists across more than 200 locations worldwide.

Under X’s policies, many countries, including the United States, enforce laws that can apply to content shared on the platform.

X explained that, “In our continuing effort to make our services available to people everywhere, if we receive a valid and properly scoped request from an authorized entity, it may be necessary to withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time.”

According to X’s guidelines, content can be blocked if the platform is compelled to act on a valid legal order or court directive. Such actions are limited to the specific jurisdiction where the legal demand is issued or where the content is deemed to violate local laws.
