Met office issues alert for heavy rain, landslide in Punjab and KP
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert warning of widespread heavy monsoon rains across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, raising the risk of urban flooding and landslides in several regions.
According to the Met Office, strong monsoon activity is currently prevailing across Punjab, with Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, and Faisalabad likely to receive heavy downpours, especially in low-lying areas that may come under water.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, heavy rainfall is forecast for Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Battagram, Shangla, Kohistan, and Torghar, while showers are also expected in Abbottabad, Mansehra, Kurram, Mohmand, Chitral, Khyber, Orakzai, Peshawar, and Mardan.
The PMD warned that urban flooding could affect low-lying areas in Swat, Abbottabad, and Peshawar, while flash floods may hit local streams in Swabi, Mardan, Kohistan, and Shangla.
Authorities have also cautioned travellers about possible road closures due to landslides in mountainous areas, advising them to confirm conditions before setting out.
Meanwhile, hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of Balochistan, although areas including Musakhel, Dera Bugti, Ziarat, Bolan, Zhob, Kalat, Mastung, and Khuzdar may experience rainfall.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has placed all relevant departments on high alert, especially in view of the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan and KP due to rising temperatures and increased rainfall.
