Karachi’s Lyari: Five-storey building collapse leaves 9 dead, eight injured up till now
A five-storey residential building collapsed in Karachi’s Lyari area, leaving several people trapped under the debris. Rescue teams have recovered eight injured individuals, including a three month old girl and 10 dead bodies, while search and rescue efforts continue to locate others.
The incident prompted an immediate response from rescue services, police, and Rangers, who swiftly launched relief operations at the site.
Heavy machinery has been brought in to aid in the removal of the rubble, while local residents are also assisting in the rescue efforts.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the building, which housed multiple families, was in a dilapidated condition prior to the collapse.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and urged the public to avoid gathering at the scene to ensure that rescue operations can proceed uninterrupted.
Police, Rangers, and rescue teams are actively engaged in the relief efforts, using heavy machinery to clear the rubble.
‘12 families were residing in the building,’ Rescue official told. “A three-month-old baby girl was pulled out alive from the debris”, he added.
Rescue sources said that the collapse also damaged surrounding buildings, increasing concerns about the structural integrity of the area.
According to officials, the building had already been declared dangerous by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). Authorities said three evacuation notices were issued over the past two years, but the structure was never vacated.
Inquiry committee formed after Lyari building collapse; senior SBCA officials suspended
The Sindh government has formed a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the collapse of a five-storey residential building in Lyari, which claimed several lives. The committee has been directed to complete its probe within three days and submit a detailed report identifying those responsible to the provincial minister for local government.
Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani took immediate notice of the incident and suspended the Director of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), the Deputy Director, and the concerned building inspector.
The minister also directed all relevant departments to expedite the ongoing rescue and relief operations in the area.
