At a United Nations Security Council session, Pakistan welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel and presented a five-point proposal aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East and resolving the Iranian nuclear dispute through peaceful means.

Speaking to the Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, emphasized that Pakistan firmly believes diplomacy and dialogue are the only viable solutions to such conflicts. “We advocate for peace, not war,” he said, adding that it is essential to avoid actions that could escalate tensions further.

Ambassador Akram noted that Pakistan’s leadership has consistently been active in promoting a peaceful resolution and continues to play a vital role at the international level. He explained that Pakistan has maintained contact with various parties to ensure diplomatic channels remain open and prevent further escalation.

The Pakistani envoy condemned Israel’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling them “illegal and a blatant violation of international norms.” He said the attacks not only harmed ongoing Iran-US negotiations but also disrupted inspection and monitoring activities by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He stressed the importance of resolving all disputes in accordance with the UN Charter and international law. Pakistan supports the revival of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or a similarly acceptable agreement, before it expires in October 2025.

In his address, Ambassador Akram urged all countries to exercise restraint, maintain diplomatic engagement, and avoid provocation at this critical juncture. “This is a time for serious negotiations, not further confrontation,” he said.

Pakistan’s diplomatic initiative comes at a time when a ceasefire has been declared following 12 days of conflict between Iran and Israel a move welcomed by several countries, including the United States, Russia, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia.

The conflict resulted in multiple casualties and hundreds of injuries, once again drawing global attention to the volatile region.
