Field Marshal Asim Munir meets President Trump, discusses bilateral ties, regional situation

Meeting reaffirms counter-terrorism cooperation, explores trade and technology partnership

Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, met US President Donald Trump at the White House in a high-profile engagement that included a luncheon in the Cabinet Room followed by a visit to the Oval Office.

According to a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), President Trump was joined by US Secretary of State Senator Marco Rubio and Special Representative for the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

Accompanying Field Marshal Munir was Pakistan’s National Security Adviser.

During the meeting, Field Marshal Munir conveyed the Government of Pakistan and the Pakistani people’s deep appreciation for President Trump’s constructive and decisive role in facilitating a ceasefire between Pakistan and India in the recent regional crisis.

He also commended Trump’s leadership in navigating complex global challenges.

In response, President Trump praised Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the region and lauded the strong counter-terrorism cooperation between the two nations.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in combating terrorism.

The two leaders also discussed expanding bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including trade, economic development, mineral resources, artificial intelligence, energy, cryptocurrency, and emerging technologies.

President Trump expressed strong interest in forging a long-term strategic and mutually beneficial trade partnership with Pakistan.

A detailed exchange of views also took place on the prevailing tensions between Iran and Israel, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of resolution of the conflict.

President Trump commended Field Marshal Asim Munir’s leadership and decisiveness during a period of complex regional dynamics.

In a gesture reflecting the warmth of bilateral ties, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir extended an invitation to President Trump, on behalf of the Government of Pakistan, to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at a mutually convenient date.

Notably, the meeting extended well beyond its scheduled one-hour duration, lasting over two hours — highlighting the depth and cordiality of the discussions.

The meeting marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to reinforce the longstanding partnership between Pakistan and the United States, built upon shared objectives of peace, stability, and prosperity.

Trump raises Pakistan’s role in avoiding war

In a press interaction, President Trump described his meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir as an honour, emphasizing the Field Marshal’s significant influence in Pakistan and key role in preventing war with India.

Responding to a journalist’s question, Trump said, “Pakistanis are good people. I love Pakistan.”

He reiterated that he had helped avert a war between India and Pakistan and thanked Field Marshal Asim Munir for not choosing the path of conflict.

He added that Field Marshal Asim Munir had been invited specifically to express this gratitude.

President Trump said negotiations with Pakistan are going on to reach a trade agreement.

On Iran, Trump said he did not want US involvement, stating, “I’ve always said Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons.”

He claimed Iran was just weeks away from achieving nuclear capability and emphasized the US aims not for a ceasefire, but for “complete victory.”

Trump noted that Pakistan understands Iran better than most and expressed confidence in Pakistani leadership, calling both Pakistani and Indian leaders “smart” and recognizing both countries as major nuclear powers.
