Delhi gets another blow from Trump: Apple warned against moving to India
After announcing a ceasefire between India and Pakistan on May 11, the US President Donald Trump has dealt another major blow to New Delhi’s plans of becoming a regional superpower. Trump has warned Apple against moving its production to India.
President Trump chided Apple CEO Tim Cook, saying he didn’t want the iPhone maker move its production to India.
“I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday. I said to him, Tim, you’re my friend. I treated you very good. You’re coming here with $500 billion but now here you are building all over India,” he said, speaking in Qatar.
“We’re not interested in you building in India. India can take care of themselves. They’re doing very well. We want you to build here,” Trump said.
This request comes as Apple seeks to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond China, a strategic move influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply chain challenges.
By establishing plants in India, Apple aims to tap into new markets and reduce its reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
Trump’s intervention highlights the ongoing debate surrounding U.S. companies’ manufacturing strategies and the potential economic implications of shifting production overseas.
Earlier this month, Trump announced a ceasefire between India an Pakistan and offered mediation on Kashmir dispute. The announcement of ceasefire turned out to be a major shock for many Indians who believed their country had become a regional superpower.
