In a historic development, Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the papal name Leo XIV.

This marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. The announcement was made by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti with the traditional proclamation “Habemus Papam” to the gathered crowd in St. Peter’s Square, following the appearance of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling a successful election.

Pope Leo XIV, aged 69, succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away last month after a 12-year tenure characterised by efforts to modernise the Church and promote inclusivity. Originally from Chicago, Prevost has extensive missionary experience in Peru and was appointed as a cardinal in 2023. He has been recognised for his quiet demeanour and support for social justice initiatives championed by Pope Francis.

In his first public address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful with the words, “Peace be with all you,” setting a tone of unity and compassion for his papacy.

The election of Pope Leo XIV is seen as a continuation of Pope Francis’ vision for a more inclusive and socially conscious Church. However, it also presents an opportunity for new leadership to address ongoing challenges and divisions within the global Catholic community.

The conclave, consisting of 133 cardinal electors, convened in the Sistine Chapel and reached a decision on the second day of deliberations. The process followed traditional protocols, with black smoke indicating unsuccessful votes and white smoke signaling the election of a new pope.

Pope Leo XIV’s election is a significant moment in the Church’s history, reflecting both a nod to tradition and an embrace of new perspectives within the Catholic hierarchy.
