Karachi transporters call off protest after talks with Sindh government

Union leaders outline their key grievances, call for immediate resolution

In Karachi, negotiations between the Sindh government and goods transporters concluded successfully on Monday, leading to the end of the transporters’ protest after they granted the provincial government a two-day deadline to address their demands.

The goods transporters had launched a protest in support of their various demands, causing disruptions around key transport arteries. As a precautionary measure, traffic police placed containers on Mai Kolachi Road to prevent any untoward incidents.

Sindh’s senior minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon, arrived at the protest site to hold direct negotiations with the representatives of the transporters. The dialogue involved leaders from the Pakistan Goods Transport Association, led by Nisar Hussain Jafri, and the United Goods Transport Association, represented by Ghulam Yasin Niazi.

During the talks, the transporters outlined their key grievances and called for immediate resolution. The Sindh government assured the protesting transporters that their concerns would be addressed promptly.

Following the negotiations, the goods transporters announced the end of their protest at Mai Kolachi Road. Speaking at the rally, Shehzad Awan stated, “We are calling off today’s protest and giving the Sindh government two days to act on our demands.”

The transporters warned, however, that if their issues were not resolved within the given timeframe, further action could be considered.

Protests by goods transporters often have a significant impact on Karachi’s logistics and supply chain operations, underscoring the critical role the sector plays in Pakistan’s economy.
