India suddenly releases water into River Jhelum, triggering flood-like situation
In yet another act of traditional aggression, India suddenly released water into the River Jhelum without prior notification, causing a sharp rise in water levels and panic in nearby villages.
The sudden release of water has once again exposed its aggressive posture, not just at borders but even over shared natural resources like water — a fundamental human right. This move is a blatant violation of international river agreements and humanitarian norms, putting the lives and properties of Pakistani citizens at risk.
At Chakothi, where the River Jhelum enters Pakistani territory, an abnormal surge in water flow was observed, creating chaos among riverside villages. Local authorities confirm that this unexpected release was made without any formal warning, amounting to what Pakistani officials have termed “water terrorism.”
Government response to the situation
Deputy Commissioner of Muzaffarabad, Mudassar Farooq, addressed public concerns, stating that there is no reason to panic. He clarified that the River Jhelum is experiencing a low-level flood, with a flow of around 22,000 cusecs currently being managed.
Meanwhile, the Director of Operations at the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirmed that no prior warning was received regarding the additional water discharge. He further explained that it would take time for the water to reach Mangla Dam and that downstream safety measures have already been put in place.
Public and international concerns
The Pakistani public has once again united against India’s aggressive water tactics, demanding that the international community take serious notice of these provocative actions. They point out that just as India frequently engages in cross-border shelling along the Line of Control, it is now weaponizing water, which they describe as an “unacceptable and criminal” act.
Calls for global intervention are growing louder, with many urging international organizations to hold India accountable for endangering civilian lives and breaching established international protocols.
